Identify

  • 10 – 12mm long.
  • Silver and/or grey in colour.
  • Has no wings.
  • Pronged tail at the end of the flattened elongated body.

Life Cycle & Habitat

  • Females deposits their eggs into crevices or cracks, or under the edges of paper.
  • Two to twenty eggs are laid per lot.
  • Freshly laid eggs are smooth and cream-coloured.

How to Spot Silverfish

  • Silverfish feeds off of fabrics such as clothing items and stored linen.
  • Thatch roofs are a common nesting ground for silverfish where they will breed and spread to the rest of the building.
  • After three days freshly laid eggs  turns yellow and exhibits shallow reticulate markings.
